My heart skipped a beat when I heard the sound of Billy shutting her car door. She'd texted last night asking for us to meet up. The last three days away from her had been a mixed bag. One part of me wanted to forget everything she had done to hurt me, go back to Holden, and convince Billy that we could be together. The other part of me recognized that I couldn't force her into anything.

When her text message asking to meet showed up last night, a part of me had wanted to tell her to forget about driving out here. I would go home, and we'd squash this whole thing.

Rachel, who had left the very night I arrived in Leeside, had been right about my feelings of anger mellowing out with time. Now, I almost didn't care what Billy wanted to tell me. I just wanted to be around her.

And then I remembered that she did not want to be around me.

I sighed and got up to answer the door.

"Hey," Billy said, her hands stuffed in the back pockets of her jeans.

I had a feeling she'd done that to keep herself from hugging me, and warmth flickered in my chest before I shoved it down. For all I knew, Billy might not have changed her mind one bit.

"Hey," I said. I peered around Billy's shoulder. "Were you followed?"

"No. I haven't seen the tail ever since you left."

"He followed me here, then left." I stepped aside and gestured for Billy to enter the house.

"Wow," she said, glancing about the place.

"I know. Staying here's been pretty nice."

"I bet."

We stood awkwardly in the area just in front of the door. "Do you want to sit down?" I asked.

"Sure."

I moved toward the dining room. I had too many fond memories of being on a couch with Billy. I couldn't trust myself not to scoot too close to her. The rigidity of the dining table furniture would help to remind me that while I just wanted to go back to how things were and deal with the hurt of her distancing herself from me when the time came, another party was involved in this.

"How have you been?" Billy asked, settling down.

I debated how to answer that. The truth was that I had been angry at her and then I just missed her. I decided to protect my heart until Billy made it clear what her intentions were.

"Okay, I guess," I said.

"It was a dumb question." Billy shook her head. "Okay, I'm just going to say what I came to say."

My stomach clenched in anticipation. It wasn't lost on me that Billy must have been thinking about the situation over the last few days, just as I was. As much as she dropped a bombshell on me, I'd dropped one on her by telling her I needed a few days away without much explanation. I didn't know how she'd interpreted my decision.

"I'll listen," I said uselessly. I mentally rolled my eyes and focused on Billy.
